SFS Gear Review: ExOfficio anti-microbial Underwear

There’s a reason I wrote this free form poem, and that reason is Exoficio’s anti-bacterial boxer shorts. Yes, today we’re talking about underwear. Let’s face it, a bad pair of underpants can make a field season miserable, while a decent pair will make you, and everyone around you, much more comfortable. Life is messy, especially while doing field work.

One thing you should be aware of is that the anti-biotic element of these drawers is nano-silver. We aren’t yet sure what effect nanoparticles will have on the environment. Some studies have been undertaken to determine how organisms respond to nanoparticle exposure and how it is incorporated into the ecosystem. What we do know is that nanoparticles do not behave like their elemental counterparts, so it is incorrect to assume the nano-silver behaves like elemental silver. Especially on your junk.

The boxers themselves are soft and comfortable. I had an early pair that got itchy after prolonged sitting, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue with the newer models. True to advertising, they stay remarkably clean, even after weeks of continuous wear. The elastic does eventually wear out and lose its spring, but only after a few years of use. They come in a few different styles, but I’m a boxers kind of guy, so haven’t tried the others.

Utility – 2/5 (They’re luxury underwear, but the anti-biotic factor ads some value)

Durability – 4/5 (They won’t last forever, but they do last)

Comfort – 4/5 (Sometimes they itch)

Price – $$$

Statement of use: I’ve gotten away with wearing a single pair on a 2-week backpacking trip. I’ve worn them on research cruises and adventure vacations. They’re also part of my regular underwear rotation (Sunday and Tuesday, with a Friday alternate).
