Last fall, we invited you to support ocean science education in classrooms around the country as part of the DonorsChoose Science Bloggers for Students Challenge. In total, 347 donors to the 2012 Science Bloggers for Students Challenge raised over $29,711 and helped 26,955 students! Team Ocean and Geobloggers, which Southern Fried Science was proudly a part of, raised the most money: $6,894! Team Scientopia Bloggers was a close second with $6,876 raised, and no other team raised over $4,000.
Within Team Ocean and Geobloggers, Southern Fried Science readers raised the 2nd most money, $1,603, and helped 1,903 students! 15 of the projects we supported were fully funded. I’ve been receiving thank-you notes from teachers, along with photos of students utilizing the completed projects. I’d like to share some of them with you.

The 2012 DonorsChoose Science Bloggers for Students Challenge is shaping up to be another big success! As of this morning, 132 people had donated a total of nearly $10,000 to help support science education in public schools, and Team Surf and Turf (Ocean and Geology Bloggers) is in the lead with over $3,000 donated. 14 Southern Fried Science readers have donated a total of almost $750 , and 5 of our 12 featured projects have been fully funded! Thanks, everyone, for all the support so far!
Due to our success so far, I’ve added four new projects to our giving page. You can see all of our featured projects here. I encourage everyone to look through the projects and consider making a donation to help students all around the country to learn about the ocean. We’ve focused on exposing students to marine life via classroom fish tanks, trips to local aquariums or to the coast, and books.
I’m pleased to announce that Southern Fried Science has once again joined the DonorsChoose Science Bloggers for Students Challenge! For those of you unfamiliar with DonorsChoose, they are an online charity that allows public school teachers to describe projects, and allows anyone to donate to these projects. In the past, the Science Bloggers Challenge has raised tens of thousands of dollars for worthy class projects all over the country!
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite ocean-themed projects, and we hope you’ll consider supporting them by donating! The 13 projects we’ve chosen to support will help teachers all over the country to teach students about the ocean and the amazing creatures that live there. You can see all of our supported projects, and the funding status of each, in the widget on the left side of the blog. You can also visit our DonorsChoose giving page.
The Challenge ends November 5th, so if you’re thinking about donating, don’t wait too long!
