Chuck is a graduate student in North Carolina focusing on apex predators and how they interact with fisheries.
Lyndell is a graduate student in North Carolina, studying the feeding ecology of cownose rays.
Iris is a graduate student in Washington studying habitat use and feeding habits of juvenile Pacific salmon and herring in Puget Sound.
Michael is a graduate student in Maryland investigating the visual systems of mantis shrimp.

Science begins in the field. Every year a vast migration occurs as biologist, ecologists, chemists, geologists, social scientists, anthropologists, physicists, oceanographers, and others leave the safe comfort or their laboratories and venture out into the field. They travel by foot, bike, boat, car, and plane searching for simultaneously the most abundant and most elusive prey – data. Some will return to the same foraging ground year after year, some will explore new worlds, never to return. For the veterans, who have participated in this great migration for decades, this is just another chapter in a long a storied career. For the young, who have just begun their training, this is a new adventure, one fraught with frustration, peril, perseverance, and discovery. These are their Journeys.

Yea, I love hip-hop and many might be surprised as how knowledgeable I am in all of the various hip-hop and rap demonimations. I am a Hip-Hop Maven….and I’m also a nerdy girl. Proud to be both. So that brings me to my newest blog project – SouthernPlayalisticEvolutonMusic. It’s a science blog about evolutionary biology explained via hip-hop music examples. It’s housed at Southern Fried Science Network.
Why a new blog? It’s a completely different topic – Evolutionary Biology; and it’s new voice for me. I’m primarily writing to an adult audience. I’m not using foul language or anything, but the evolutionary topics of sexual selection and mate choice are thoroughly explored. Plus, I will likely be sampling some songs with colorful language. I wanted to keep the voice clear and respect the following this blog has aquired. This is an introductory science blog about urban ecology that reaches diverse and family-friendly audiences.

Last February we introduced Bomai Cruz as the second blog in the Southern Fried Science Network and the first to operate under the blog.southernfriedscience.com format. Our plans to expand the network lay dormant after that first launch, for many reasons, not the least of which was that I had just moved Southern Fried Science to a self-hosted platform and was still learning the ropes. So for the last several months I’ve been working behind the scenes, working off and on to lay the foundations for a larger Southern Fried Science Network.
It should come as no surprise that the recent incident at ScienceBlogs finally inspired me to finish the job. So today, we are proud to announce the launch of The Gam – the official mainpage for the Southern Fried Science Network. Over the next few weeks we’ll be adding more blogs to our fleet and expanding our little corner of the blogosphere (do blogospheres have corners?).
Go check out the Gam (you’ll have to go there to find out what a gam is) and check back over the next few weeks. You won’t be disappointed.
