Barnacles grow on a cluster of oyster shells that washed up on Trinity Island in the Isles Dernieres Barrier Islands Refuge in southern Terrebonne Parish. Oyster reefs provide not only a home for many other species of marine life, but they also improve the water quality of the region and act as a speed bump for waves and storm surge on the Gulf Coast.
