Playing God – How the ESA “God Squad” just voted for the extinction of a uniquely American whale

Conservation, News, Science

On March 31, 2026, the federal Endangered Species Committee (previously dubbed the “God Squad”) met for the first time in three decades to do exactly what their name suggests: deciding the fate of an entire species.

In a record-breaking 15-minute meeting (barely enough time to order a latte), the committee voted unanimously the committee granted a sweeping exemption to the oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico, effectively negating the Endangered Species Act (ESA) across a massive swath of federal waters.

The justification? “National Security.”

The whale in the room

During the entire hearing, chaired by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and attended by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the committee managed a truly impressive feat of o They didn’t mention the Rice’s whale once.

Notably absent from the official committee discussion was any mention of the species whose existence now hangs by a thread. The hearing did not once reference the Rice’s whale (sometimes referred to as The Great American whale). This a critically endangered baleen whale endemic only to the Gulf of Mexico with an estimated population of only 50 to 51 individuals.

It is one of the most endangered species IN THE WORLD. There are 50 times more pandas than this whale species.  A species that was partly discovered because the Deepwater Horizon oil spill happened right in the middle of it’s habitat and potentially killed nearly a quarter of the species…

Also ignored were other endangered species such sea turtles and Gulf sturgeon.

By ignoring the very biological reality the ESA is designed to protect, the committee has set a chilling precedent: environmental laws are now optional if they interfere with the oil industry.

A masterclass in gaslighting (literally)

The irony here is thicker than a 2010 oil slick. The Trump administration argues that we must bypass environmental laws to achieve “energy independence” for the sake of national security. Meanwhile, they are busy canceling renewable energy projects faster than you can say “offshore wind.” One of the main arguments being used by the administration to stifle offshore wind is that it killing endangered North Atlantic right whales (it isn’t).

If energy independence were truly the goal of national security, the logical path would be diversifying the energy grid with renewables that aren’t subject to global oil price shocks.

The hypocrisy is the cherry on top of this oil-slicked sundae. The administration recently canceled major offshore wind projects with TotalEnergies. It turns out “energy dominance” only counts if it comes out of a hole in the ground and into a campaign coffer. Instead, the “God Squad” has chosen to double down on a 19th-century fuel source that is currently being phased out around the world, at the cost of a species that has existed for millennia.

The receipts: who just bought a species’ extinction?

If you’re wondering why the “God Squad” is suddenly acting like a PR firm for Exxon, look no further than the campaign contributions. This isn’t just policy; it’s a blatant quid pro quo. The oil and gas industry poured record-breaking millions into the 2024 election, and today was the day the bill came due.

Let’s look at the specific prizes the oil and gas industry walked away with today. The vote didn’t just “exempt” the Gulf, but it cleared the biological “red tape” for a massive surge in drilling activity mandated by the administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). This legislation requires a staggering 30 lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico, a pace that would be legally impossible if they actually had to follow the Endangered Species Act.

Specifically, this vote greases the wheels for:

  • Lease Sale “Big Beautiful Gulf 2”: A massive auction held just weeks ago on March 11, 2026, covering 80 million offshore acres. Without today’s exemption, every single one of those new leases would have been tied up in “ship speed” and “noise pollution” lawsuits for years.
  • BP’s $5 Billion Kaskida Project: This ultra-deepwater drilling project was officially approved mid-March. It sits right in the path of the remaining Rice’s whales, but thanks to the God Squad, BP no longer has to worry about those pesky “extinction” concerns.
  • Alaska’s Cook Inlet: The exemption sets the stage for the first of six mandated lease sales in Alaska this month, proving that if you can kill a whale in the Gulf, you can kill a beluga in the North.

The ultimate quid pro quo

Why the rush? Follow the money. The oil and gas industry is one of the top contributors to the current administration, and they’ve been very vocal about their “frustration” with the ESA.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum (who chaired today’s meeting) has been fast-tracking energy development since day one of the second term. By invoking “national security,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth effectively handed the Administration’s donors a permanent pass to ignore the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the ESA simultaneously.

Moreover, by declaring the Gulf an ESA-free zone, the administration has set a terrifying precedent: any corporation with a big enough checkbook and even the most tenuous links to military equipment could now claim “national security” to ignore any law they find inconvenient.

The Rice’s whale may be one of the most endangered animals on Earth, but in the eyes of the God Squad, it’s just a speed bump on the road to another record-breaking fiscal quarter.
