According to J-Archive, sharks have been featured in 417 Jeopardy clues, including about a dozen whole categories. I’ve selected what I believe to be the most difficult 10 of them. How many can you get correct?

2 Hard Sharks for $,1000, 05/16/2002: “With a name for the Maori language, this powerful shark is also called the blue pointer.”

5 All About Animals for $1,200, 07/27/2007: [Jimmy of the Clue Crew delivers from the Institute of Marine Sciences at UC Santa Cruz] “Though it has the name of a fierce big cat, this type of shark is a menace to clams, but not people.

6. Shark-uterie for $1,200, 12/10/2019: “This alliterative type of shark sounds like it uses metal shapes to turn dough into Christmas treats.”

7: Sharks and Jets for $800: “Most sharks have 5 pairs of these, those with 7 are among the oldest shark species in existence.”

8. Two words in one for $1,000, 10/6/2023. “A shark appendange plus a type of beer gives us this musical conclusion.”

9. Before and after for $1,600, 12/16/25. “Anglo-Saxon king of medieval Britain who prowls coastal waters as a dangerous predator of the genus Carcharodon.”

10. Living fossils for $400, 1/27/26. “The nose of the goblin shark is covered in organs called ampullae of Lorenzini for detecting prey & this phenomenon.”

Correct responses are below. How’d you do?

  1. Tiger shark.
  2. Mako
  3. Jump the shark
  4. Chum
  5. Leopard
  6. Cookie Cutter
  7. Gill slits
  8. Finale (Fin + Ale). Don’t worry, I hate the wordplay ones too.
  9. Alfred the Great White Shark
  10. Electricty (I’d also accept electromagnetism here).
