FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Experts respond to Executive Order renaming a subsection of the Gulf of Mexico

In an Executive Action entitled Restoring Names that Honor American Greatness, the President declared that:

“The U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico,” shall be renamed the Gulf of America.

In response to the performative renaming of a sub-section of the US portion of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America (see figure 1 below), deep-sea ecologist and high seas policy expert Dr. Andrew Thaler has the following comment:

“It’s not even a gulf.”
