Let’s be honest: if you are working in conservation, you have probably stared down a peer-review nightmare that made you want to throw your laptop into ocean.
We’ve all been told the same myth since undergrad: do the science; write the paper; pass the peer-review gauntlet; and magically you’ve saved the planet. The peer-reviewed paper is treated as the holy grail, the definitive metric of academic success, and the ultimate arbiter of truth.
However, if the goal is actually conserving biodiversity and making sure critical data lands in the hands of managers before a species goes extinct, the current academic publishing pipeline isn’t just sluggish. It’s actively working against us.
The peer review bottleneck
Conservation is a crisis discipline. We are fighting against rapid habitat loss, climate shifts, and dwindling populations. Yet, our primary method of sharing information moves at the speed of a heavily concussed sea slug. In short, the modern journal system is a conservation hazard. Here are some reasons why the academic journal system is failing those on the conservation front lines:
1. The eternal wait
The timeline from submission to publication can easily drag on for a year or more. A massive chunk of this delay comes down to one exhausting fact: nobody wants to review papers for free anymore. Because peer review is completely uncompensated, voluntary labor squeezed into the margins of already-overburdened schedules, editors are burning through dozens of invites just to find even just two people willing to look at a manuscript. By the time a paper actually sees the light of day, the management window for a critical wildlife decision has likely slammed shut.
2. Paywalls you shall not pass
Let’s say your paper on a newly discovered threat finally gets published. Great, except it’s locked behind a $45 paywall. The harsh reality is that the vast majority of state, federal, and NGO conservation agencies do not subscribe to high-end academic journals (or many staple wildlife and fisheries journals that you might think were essential reading). A field biologist working for a state fish and wildlife office or a local land trust literally cannot read your paper. Unless you have $3,000-$10,000 lying around to pay for Open Access fees, your science is functionally invisible to the people who actually make daily management decisions.
3. Gatekeeping, biases, and “Reviewer 2”
Peer review is supposed to be an objective quality check, but humans are inherently biased. We see widespread gatekeeping where reviewers fail to understand regional contexts, reject novel methodologies that don’t fit their specific paradigm, or harbor implicit biases against researchers from the Global South. I’ve personally seen papers rejected because of they are of “limited interest” because they involves marine species/ecosystems or are conducted outside of the U.S., or don’t use the latest fancy tool or analysis method, despite providing important data and dealing with some of the most threatened or significant ecosystems and species. Moreover, valuable data gets buried or delayed because a reviewer demands unnecessary re-analyses or additional data, such as redundant three-year control study for a population that will be gone in two. Or even worse, reviewers are so toxic to submitters that they become so disillusioned and disheartened that they never publish vital, much needed research.
4. The avalanche of noise
We are living in an era of unprecedented scientific output. Thousands of papers are published every single week. Increasingly now that AI is allowing “publishing mills” to churn out multiple papers a week. However, more papers doesn’t automatically mean better conservation. Vital data ends up completely “buried” in an overwhelming avalanche of text. Finding the exact, actionable nugget of information you need for a specific estuary or species has become a needle-in-a-haystack problem.
The paradox of the legal “Gold Standard”
So, why don’t we just abandon the journals entirely and publish everything on blogs, websites or Substack. Because of a massive, systemic legal paradox: the law cares about peer-reviewed publications.
Major environmental legislation (such as the U.S. Endangered Species Act or the National Environmental Policy Act)—explicitly mandates that agencies use the “best available science” to make listings, designate critical habitat, or approve environmental impact statements. When a listing decision is challenged in court (and they always get challenged), judges look for objective, bulletproof standards of validation. Historically, that validation is a peer-reviewed journal article. If an agency bases a multi-million dollar conservation restriction on a non-peer-reviewed white paper or a blog post, industry lawyers will tear it to shreds in court.
Therefore we are trapped in a system where the very mechanism required to make a conservation decision legally binding is too slow and inaccessible to help the species in time.
What can we do to fix this?
We can’t rewrite environmental laws overnight, but we can hack the system to bridge the gap between rigorous validation and rapid, accessible deployment. Here are some suggestions for how we can help to fix the problem.
- Normalize preprints. Stop waiting for journals to give you permission to share your data. The moment your paper is ready for submission, drop it onto a free, open-access preprint server. It gets a time-stamped DOI, it’s immediately readable by agency biologists, and it can still undergo the standard peer-review pipeline concurrently.
- Translate the science. If you publish a peer-reviewed paper, your job isn’t done. You need to translate it. Write a one-page, jargon-free management brief. Create a blog post detailing the actionable takeaways. Send a direct PDF copy to the specific field office managers handling that species (which is totally legal under most journal sharing policies!).
- Demand institutional change. Universities need to stop valuing the quantity of high-impact journal publications over real-world application. Tenure and promotion committees must start rewarding actionable science, public communication, and grey-literature policy briefs.
- Fund open access. Grant-making institutions and government agencies need to bake Open Access publishing costs directly into the baseline budget of every single conservation grant. If you can afford the field trips and the genetic sequencing, you can afford to make the results free to the public.
- Change the academic publishing model. This is a harder task. The academic publish model is broken. Vast profits are being made off of the back of volunteer reviewers, who often do not have the time, or temperament, to review appropriately. Academics are becoming resentful that these massive publishing profits are not being shared with content producers. We need a more equitable system where reviewers are being paid to preform professional reviews (and get credit for doing so from their universities). Also, invest these profits in developing systems to remove publishing barriers for early career scientists, scientists from lower income countries and non-English speakers.
The peer-reviewed paper isn’t going away, and its role as a legal shield for our environment remains vital. But we have to stop treating the journal publication as the end of the scientific process. It is just the baseline. The real work starts when we rip that science out of the ivory tower and drag it into the daylight where it belongs.
